"I don't like my ears"

Some people are born with ears that stick out (bat ears or prominent ears). Others have one ear different form the other.

Am I a good candidate for ear correction?

You may benefit from ear correction if your ears stick out, if there is a difference between sides or if they are misshapen.

What are the benefits of ear correction?

The goal of ear correction is to improve the shape and appearance of your ears.

What does ear correction involve?

Children usually need to be asleep for this procedure. In adults you can choose to be awake (local anaesthetic) or asleep. We make a short cut behind your ear, reshape the cartilage and then finish with stitches. A dressing and head bandage are sometimes applied.

What happens before my ear correction?

Your first appointment will be with our Consultant Plastic Surgeon Chris Dunkin.

This initial assessment includes a full medical history and examination. We will then talk about what we can do to help, what is involved and what you can expect in terms of outcome, recovery and aftercare. Following your first consultation, we will write to you with further information and then see you again to get you ready for your procedure.

What happens after my ear correction?

You can go home the same day and come back for review about a week later. Some swelling, bruising and numbness in the ears is common after surgery and we will advise you to wear a headband in bed at night for six weeks. You can return to your normal activites as soon as you wish.

What are the downsides to ear correction?

It is unusual to have significant problems after pinnaplasty. There is a small risk of bleeding, infection, slow healing, skin loss, cartilage loss, poor scars (rarely hypertrophic or keloid), under-correction, over-correction, asymmetry and recurrence of deformity. The published reoperation rate after ear correction is 10%.

Are there any alternatives to ear correction?

Ear cartilage can be moulded with splints in the first few months of life but unfortunately not after that age.
