What is Labia improvement (labiaplasty)?

Some women don't like their labia because they are too big, too long or one side is different from the other. Enlarged labia can be sore particularly when riding a horse or bike. Some women feel they are visible in underwear or tight clothing. The inner lips (labia minora) are usually involved. Embarrassing Bodies on Channel 4 and other TV programs have highlighted the problem and shown more women that there is a solution.

Labioplasty is a relatively straightforward procedure to improve the size and shape of your labia usually done with you asleep. You can go home the same day and get back to all your normal activities as soon as you feel comfortable. We use dissolving stitches so there are no stitches to remove. We like to see you for review about a week after your procedure to ensure everything is settling down.

What happens before my labiaplasty?

Your first appointment will be with our Consultant Plastic Surgeon Chris Dunkin.

This initial assessment includes a full medical history and examination with one of our nurses to keep you company. We will then talk about what we can do to help, what is involved and what you can expect in terms of outcome, recovery and aftercare. We can look at before and after photographs of our patients to demonstrate what can be achieved. Following your first consultation, we will write to you with further information to help you decide if you would like to proceed.

Are there any downsides to labiaplasty?

Problems after labioplasty are uncommon but we will talk to you in detail about the procedure and potential complications at your consultation. Most of our patients are delighted with the outcome of their surgery and often tell us that they wished they had done it years ago. Potential problems include swelling, asymmetry of size & shape, overcorrection, undercorrection, need for revision, tender or sensitive scar, problems with intercourse, problems with anaesthetic, blood clots (DVT, PE), bleeding, infection, fluid collection (seroma), slow healing, poor scars, change in pigmentation, change in sensation and pain.
