What is a browlift?

Browlift is an operation that raises the eyebrows, placing them back in a more youthful position. This has the effect of opening up your eyes, giving them a brighter, more youthful look. There are a number of different ways to lift the brow, including open transcoronal and endoscopic (keyhole) browlift, temporal lift and tranblepharoplasty browlift. There are other types for specific problems.

Mr Dunkin will be happy to discuss the various options with you during your consultation.

Am I a good candidate for browlift?

As the years go by, the eyebrows move down onto the upper eyelid giving a tired, age-worn look. Repeated action of the forehead muscles produce lines and creases in the skin, resulting in a sad or even angry or aggressive appearance. Browlift can help improve these problems.

What are the benefits of browlift?

Browlift raises the eyebrows to a more youthful position, giving your eyes a brighter, more open look. The forehead muscles that produce lines and creases are addressed at the same time.

What does browlift involve?

Browlift is performed with you asleep under general anaesthetic and requires a 1-2 night inpatient stay. Browlift addresses two elements of the forehead; brow position and ‘frown muscles’.

Open browlift.

This procedure involves making a cut across the top of the head behind the hairline. This is the original way to lift a brow and is still the best way for some people.

Endoscopic browlift.

Endoscopic browlift is the modern approach and involves lifting the forehead via 3-5 small incisions behind the hairline, using an endoscope, (surgical telescope and camera). This is our preferred technique for browlift but is not appropriate for everyone.

Temporal lift or mini-browlift.

Temporal lift or mini-browlift is useful for lifting the outer art of the eyebrow in some people and is done via a short incision in the hair over the temple.

Transblepharoplasty browlift.

In transblepharoplasty browlift we raise the brow at the same time as upper blepharoplasty through the same incision. So no extra scars. We often use an Endotine device to maintain the lift.

Simple brow lift / browpexy.

Simple browlift or browpexy tends to be done for older people in whom the scar is well hidden and in people with facial palsy. Browlift can be done at the same time as upper blepharoplasty to improve the eyes and brow and with a facelift for total facial rejuvenation.

What happens before my browlift?

Your first appointment will be with our Consultant Plastic Surgeon Chris Dunkin.

This initial assessment includes a full medical and cosmetic history and a full examination. We will then talk about what we can do to help, what is involved and what you can expect in terms of outcome, recovery and aftercare. Following your first consultation, we will write to you with further information and then see you again to get you ready for your procedure. During your second appointment we will discuss the procedure you would like and go through this in detail, including any potential problems.

What happens after my browlift?

Temporal lifts and simple brow lift can be done with you awake as a day-case procedure. Recovery time is short and the chance of problems is low. The effect of the lift may not last as long. Open and endoscopic browlifts are done with you asleep and take a few hours. Afterwards a head bandage keeps dressings in place and a drains may be used overnight as a safety valve to stop any fluid collecting. Swelling and bruising are common for the first week and gradually settles down. An extra pillow in bed and cool packs help reduce this.

What are the downsides to browlift?

It is uncommon to have problems after browlift. We will go through the specific problems with you in clinic. In general there is a small risk of bleeding, infection, slow healing, poor scars, asymmetry, recurrence of brow ptosis. Numbness, itching and funny sensations (paraesthesia) in the forehead and scalp are common after browlift and usually resolve. Hair loss around the scars is occasionally seen bu tis almost always temporary. Forehead muscles can weaken after browlift but his usually resolves. Finally, any procedure around the eyes can result in blindness. This is extremely rare (about 1:25000) and is heralded by severe pain and problems with your vision.

Are there any alternatives to browlift?

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is good for treating creases around the eyes and forehead and can temporarily lift. LASER resurfacing or chemical peels are used for fine creases. Excess skin of the upper eyelid can be treated by blepharoplasty – indeed patients often choose brow lift and blepharoplasty together.
