What is body contouring?

Body contouring describes surgery to improve body shape and contour for people with excess fat and skin, particularly after significant weight loss. It involves the combination of liposuction and skin/fat excision or removal.

Am I a good candidate for body contouring?

You would benefit from body contouring if you have excess fat and/or skin. It is not designed a solution for quick weight loss.

What are the benefits of body contouring?

Body contouring removes loose skin and fat, most commonly from the tummy, thighs and arms. These reduction procedures can be combined with liposuction to improve the final result.

What happens before my body contouring?

During your first appointment you will be assessed and advised by a UK-trained Consultant Plastic Surgeon. This assessment includes taking a full medical history and examining you in the company of one of our nurses. Next we will discuss the result you are hoping for and which procedure will help achieve this goal. We will discuss what the procedure involves, including the potential risks and complications. Following this we will give you further information, to help you decide if this is the right choice for you, and plan a second appointment, to give you a chance to ask any further questions and prepare you for surgery.

Combines the benefits of liposuction and abdominoplasty to sculpt and improve the result and again can be done with either mini- or full abdominoplasty. Lipoabdominoplasty enables us to remove more fat and is particularly useful in people with excess fat in the hip/flank area (‘love handles’) or in those who find it difficult to lose weight before surgery.

What happens after my body contouring?

The operation is performed with you asleep (general anaesthetic). When you wake after surgery, you will have a drip and pain relief. The wounds will be closed with dissolving stitches and covered with shower-proof dressings. Drains are used to stop fluid building up (like a safety valve). You can go home when you are ready – most people go home on the second or third day after surgery. Wounds usually heal in 1-3 weeks. You can expect some swelling and tenderness for the first few weeks. Scars take 3-6 months to settle down. Numbness is common and usually improves. You will be encouraged to mobilise as soon as possible after surgery. You can usually return to work and other activities 1-4 weeks later, depending on the procedure and your work the activities. You should rest from the gym for about 6 weeks.

What are the downsides to body contouring?

There is no such thing as risk-free surgery and body contouring surgery is no different. It is important to balance the risks and benefits for you. Body contouring leaves a scar wherever excess skin is removed. Liposutcion leaves short, usually well hidden scars. Potential complications include problems with the anaesthetic (your anaesthetist will talk to you about these) and blood clots (deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolus), bleeding, wound infection, slow wound healing, fluid collection (seroma), asymmetry, poor scars, skin puckering, excess skin at the ends of the scar and the need for revision surgery. Swelling can continue for longer after liposuction.

How can I minimise my risks?

Research suggests that non-smokers have fewer problems after surgery. We would strongly encourage you to stop smoking before your body contouring. If you use nicotine patches, stop these four weeks before your operation. If you are overweight, a weight loss and exercise programme may be helpful before your operation.

Are there any alternatives to body contouring?

Weight loss and exercise can improve abdominal shape and contour instead of or as well as body contouring.
