What are inverted nipples?

On occasion, nipples are inverted or ‘stuck in’ and wont come out. This may be a problem on one side of both. Occasionally this may also be a sign of breast disease.

What can be done?

Inverted nipples can be corrected and made to protrude outwards. This is a short procedure usually done under local anaesthetic with an injection to numb the skin. You can go home after the procedure as soon as you are ready.

What happens now?

Your first appointment will take place with our Consultant Plastic Surgeon Chris Dunkin.

This initial assessment includes a full medical and breast history and an examination in the presence of one of our nurses. We will then talk about what we can do to help, what is involved and what you can expect in terms of outcome, recovery and aftercare.

Following your first consultation, we will write to you with further information.

What does inverted nipple correction involve?

There are a number of different ways to correct inverted nipples. These involve releasing the breast milk ducts to allow the retracted nipple to come out. The skin is then closed with dissolving stitches and a showerproof dressing.

What are the downsides to inverted nipple correction?

It is unusual to have problems after inverted nipple correction. There is a small risk of infection, bleeding, slow healing and poor scars. Nipples occasionally invert again after release and need further release. Dividing the milk ducts means breast feeding will probably not be possible afterwards.

Are there any alternatives to nipple correction?

Suction devices can work and are sometimes permanent. Trying these first does no harm.
