What is a liposuction and body contouring?

Liposuction is the targeted removal of excess fat in the body using cannulae and suction. It leave a few half-centimeter scars and can be done as a day case procedure. Men ask for liposuction for their abdomen, breasts and neck. This improves the shape of these areas on its own or in conjunction with other procedure like abdominoplasty. Lipoabdominoplasty is a procedure that combines the benefits of liposuction and abdominoplasty to improve your body shape to get you the best result.

We can remove more fat with liposuction that with and also target fat in areas such as the hip and flank ('love handles') or upper abdomen. It can be helpful for those people who find it difficult to lose weight before surgery. Body contouring involves a combination of procedures including liposuction and skin/fat reduction – ideal for patients who have lost large amounts of weight.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

You may benefit from liposuction if you have excess fat in specific areas of your body that you cant improve with diet and exercise. It is not a panacea for weight loss alone.

What happens before my liposuction?

Your first appointment will be with our Consultant Plastic Surgeon Chris Dunkin. This initial assessment includes a full medical history and examination. We will then talk about what we can do to help, what is involved and what you can expect in terms of outcome, recovery and aftercare.

We can look at before and after photographs of our patients to demonstrate the type of outcome that can be achieved. Following your first consultation, we will write to you with further information and then see you again to get you ready for your procedure. During your second appointment we will discuss the procedure you would like and go through this in detail, including any potential problems.

What happens after my liposuction?

We can do your liposuction with you awake or asleep and the can go home the same day or stay the night. We use small sutures and showerproof dressings so you can shower and as normal. We see you back a week later for review and to remove any sutures. Swelling and bruising usually settle in the first week and most patients go back to work after this time.

What are the downsides to liposuction?

Most patients don't have any problems after liposuction but we will discuss the potential complications with you in detail in clinic.  Liposuction leaves a couple of small scars. Potential complications include problems with anaesthetic, blood clots (deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolus), bleeding, skin injury, viscus perforation, infection, slow healing, fluid collection (seroma), persistent swelling, poor scars, contour irregularity and asymmetry.

How can I minimise my risks?

Smokers have more problems after any surgery and we would strongly encourage you to stop smoking before your procedure. Also if you take Aspirin or other NSAIDs then stop these at least a week before your procedure. If you are overweight, a weight loss and exercise programme may be helpful before your operation.

Are there any alternatives to liposuction?

Weight loss and exercise can reduce fat and improve your body shape instead of or as well as surgery. Beauticians offer a number of treatments to reduce tummy size, such as Vaser, Smartlipo and these may help some people. However there is little good evidence that these are effective in the medium or long term.
