What is breast augmentation?

Breast Enlargement, also known as Breast Augmentation, is an operation to enlarge and improve the look and shape of your breasts.

Am I a good candidate for a breast augmentation?

There are two groups of women who would commonly benefit from Breast Augmentation. Women who feel their breasts are too small and women who were once happy with size and shape of their breasts but feel there has been a change due to getting older or following childbirth.

What could breast enlargement do for me?

Breast Augmentation will make your breasts both larger and improve their shape and studies show that it increases self-confidence and self-esteem.

What happens before my procedure?

Your first appointment is with your surgeon, Consultant Plastic Surgeon Chris Dunkin. This assessment includes a full medical and breast history and an examination in the presence of one of our nurses. We will ask what result you want in terms of shape and size and then discuss what we can do to help. We will go through the procedure with you so you understand what is involved and answer any questions you might have. Following your first consultation you will receive further information in the post to help you decide if this is the right choice for you.

At your second appointment you can tell us what size and shape implants you would like. We will go through the procedure again in detail, discuss the potential complications and talk you through your recovery and aftercare.

What does a breast augmentation procedure involve?

There are a number of different techniques to improve the size and shape of your breasts. We will help you choose the best solution to achieve the results you want. Most involve the placement of a silicone implant under the breast, which takes about an hour and is performed with you asleep.

There are three key quesions in breast augmentation

1. What is the best type of implant?

You have a choice of round or shaped (teardrop) implants, depending on your size and shape and the result you wish to achieve. (We only use cohesive silicone gel implants from the best UK suppliers).

Please note: We have never used PIP Implants for any of our patients. We are happy to offer advice regarding the need for appropriate treatment or replacement if you have PIP implants. Please call on 0844 272 5951 for more information or click here if you would like to arrange a consultation.

2. Where should my implants go?

Implants are placed under the breast (subglandular), under the muscle (submuscular) or under the pectoral fascia (subfascial), depending on your shape, size and result you wish to achieve.

3. Where will my scar be?

Most women choose a scar that is hidden under the breast in the inframammary fold (IMF) that is about 5-6cm long. There are other options available and we will be happy to discuss you this at your consultation.

What happens after my breast augmentation?

We use dissolving sutures and showerproof dressings so you can shower and wash your hair straight away and don't have any stitches to remove. Most of our patients choose to stay one night but you can go home the same day if you prefer. We like you to wear a lycra-rich bra or crop-top for the first six weeks or so after treatment - buy a bra for the size you hope to be after surgery adding a little for post-operative swelling. Most girls have healed in a week although you can expect some swelling and tenderness for about 2-4 weeks. Most of our patients are back to normal activites and work within 1-2 weeks but you might want to rest from the gym or similar vigorous activity for 4-6 weeks. Once your breasts have healed, we advise you to regularly massage with Bio-oil or moisturising cream. Typically, the scars settle within 6-12 months.

What are the downsides to breast augmentation?

Most girls do not have problems after breast augmentation. However there is no such thing as risk-free surgery and it is important for you to balance the benefits and risks for you. Potential complications include problems with the anaesthetic and blood clots (deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolus), bleeding, wound infection, slow healing, changes in sensation, breast pain, asymmetry and poor scars. Very rarely infection involves the implant, which has to be removed and a new implant replaced later. Scar tissue forms around all implants (capsule) and this can become tight and painful with time (capsular contracture). You may need to have the implants exchanged in the future. Following breast augmentation you should examine your breasts regularly for changes and seek medical advice if you concerned. Silicone implants are relatively safe medical implants that have been studied extensively (further information is available on the UK Government Department of Health website). Finally there is an association with ACLC. We will discuss these with you in detail in clinic.

Are there any alternatives to breast augmentation surgery?

Suction devices worn for a long time can increase breast size but this tends not to be permanent.
