What is reconstructive plastic surgery?

Reconstructive surgery is a branch of surgery concerned with the restoration of form and function. Plastic surgery is associated by the press and public with cosmetic surgery. Hoever most plastic surgery in the UK involves the treatment of congenital problems (cleft lip and palate), the treatment of cancer and reconstruction following cancer treatment (breast cancer, head and neck cancer and skin cancer) and surgery following injury (including facial, upper and lower limb injuries). The goals of reconstructive plastic surgery are to repair wounds and restore function. This may be achieved simply with stitches or may require complex microsurgical transplantation surgery. Plastic Surgeons provide reconstruction for people with problems from their head to their toe and from newborn babies to the very elderly. A good source of information on reconstructive surgery is the BAPRAS website (www.bapras.org.uk).
