What is facial palsy?

The muscles of the face are controlled by the brain via the facial nerve. Anything that affects the facial nerve can cause weakness or paralysis of the face. This causes problems with raising your eyebrows, closing your eyes and controlling your mouth, with effects on your eating, drinking and speech. The most common causes of facial palsy we see in clinic are:

Unresolved or incompletely resolved Bell’s palsy
Following surgery to your brain, face, head and neck
Following injury to the facial nerve from trauma
Congenital facial weakness (weakness you are born with)

Can anything be done to improve my face?

Facial palsy is a devastating problem for some people. Some avoid photographs and social gatherings, others even stop going out at all. Many patients have been told for years that there is nothing that can be done but that is no longer the case. Advances inmedical and surgical science have improved the treatment options for patients with facial palsy. There is still no cure but there is lots that can be done to help.

What treatment options are available?

When we meet in clinic we will take a full medical history and examine you to see what we can do to help. We will discuss all the options available to you, including non-surgical and surgical treatment. After your first appointment we will send you information in the post and arrange to se you again to discuss how you would like to proceed.
